Loud washing machine? Wobbling drum? Those are the classic signs of worn bearings, and it's worth getting it looked at before it does more damage.
What are they and why do they fail
Bearings sit at the back of the drum and let it spin smoothly. Water exposure, rust and general wear gradually wear them out.
Signs to look for
- Loud rumbling, grinding or knocking during the spin cycle
- The drum moves excessively when pushed by hand
- Water pooling underneath, as the drum seal may have gone too
- Noticeable wobble during use
- A burning smell in bad cases
Repair or replace?
Some machines allow the bearings to be replaced on their own. Others have a sealed drum, meaning the whole drum assembly needs replacing, which can cost more than the machine is worth. We'll tell you which you're dealing with and give an honest answer either way.
